Goal for this year is 50 books!
** denotes a reread.

That awkward moment in April when you've forgotten what you've read, so you kinda start all over.....

1. Nightwoods by Charles Frazier
-Very good; not as good as his other two novels, but really good...I'm probably just bias though because I really love the other two novels... ;p

side note: Sorry for the length and possibility of it being hard to understand. I was just ranting and letting thoughts free. (:

If there’s one thing I want before next school year (even before then, if possible) it’s more positive self confidence. I really hate it when news segments talk about how it’s all of the celebrities and movies and models that people see all of the time that hurt self esteem. This is true, for lots of people. But I think  that certain things that promote helping with confidence, really aren’t any help at all.

Mainly, I’m talking about Seventeen magazine. I buy it every month, for the hair, the clothes, the free stuff. I don’t like the stories of “real girls” who are nothing like me. For some reason, each tale seems to be about some girl with a pretty face. They may have a tragic story, military boyfriend or messed up family, but they’re always pretty. They’re always the mainstream view of pretty.

The older issues of Seventeen put some spreads where people with “flaws” stated how it made them feel pretty. I just think it’s so insulting to say that they’re proud of it, in a spread, when it shouldn’t be stated that it’s a spread for these “flaws” they find beautiful. Why can’t it just be a beautiful spread? I don’t see how this helps self esteem.

I especially hate the exercising pull-outs in all the issues of Seventeen. It’s absolutely ridiculous. They promote “Body Peace” and being happy with one’s self, but then they have places where it’s stated that exercising can boost that view and make one happier. Exercising and staying in shape is great; I just don’t know how a magazine that wants young women to view themselves positively also has exercising every issue. Seeing beauty in yourself doesn’t have to come from being a general size. Yes, some people want to lose weight, or be more toned, or be athletic. Some also think they are beautiful the way they are.

I guess what I’m getting at is, if someone looked for a REAL role model of self confidence in culture, where would it be? Even books with female main characters have periods where the mc doubts herself, or needs the approval of someone else. Even Katniss in the Hunger Games is always used; in the end, you realize she’s always being played in the game.

Role models should be at home, and luckily enough I have many. I just want to think about the people who may not have a role model. Who, or what, can they look up to, to know they’re beautiful?
